    Why This Approach Works

Research-based rationale for our collaborative feedback initiative

    Why This Work Matters

Research shows that collaborative feedback and culturally responsive teaching transform student outcomes. Here's the evidence behind our approach.

    Moving Beyond Traditional Professional Development

Most professional development gives us new ideas but doesn't help us actually implement them in our classrooms. Research shows that meaningful change happens when:

Teachers have choice and agency in their learning
Professional growth is job-embedded (happening in real classrooms)
We learn together rather than in isolation
    Student voice guides our decisions
We focus on relationships and culture as much as strategies

From SMART Goals to HARD + PEERS Goals

Traditional SMART goals often encourage "playing it safe" rather than pursuing transformative change. We're using two types of goals that research shows are more effective:

    Department Level

    HARD Goals

    H
    HighChallenging enough to energize us
    A
    AchievableRealistic with strategic effort
    R
    Results-focusedConnected to student impact
    D
    DefiniteClear and measurable
    Individual Level

    PEERS Goals

    P
    PersonalMeaningful to your teaching journey
    E
    ExcitingEnergizing and motivating
    A
    AchievableA meaningful stretch for you
    R
    RelevantConnected to student needs
    S
    Student-focusedMeasured by impact on learners

    Street Data: Beyond Test Scores

While standardised tests tell us some things, "street data", the qualitative evidence we gather directly from students and families, reveals the stories behind the numbers.

    What Street Data Tells Us:

    • Many students feel disconnected from traditional French content
    • Families want to support French learning but need accessible entry points
    • Students crave authentic, meaningful communication opportunities
    • Cultural responsiveness dramatically increases engagement

This data drives our collaborative feedback process, ensuring every decision centres student voice and equity.

    The Science of Feedback

Effective feedback is one of the most powerful tools for learning, with an effect size of 1.01, meaning it can accelerate learning by more than a full year. But feedback only works when it:

    • Focuses on the task, not the person
    • Provides clear direction for improvement
    • Happens in a context of trust and mutual respect
    • Is timely and specific to observable behaviours

    Building Adaptive Expertise

Our approach is designed to develop adaptive expertise, the ability to flexibly apply knowledge and skills to new and complex situations. This is essential for responsive teaching.

    Routine Expertise

Applying the same strategies regardless of context or student needs

    Adaptive Expertise

Flexibly responding to student needs with culturally responsive, evidence-based practices

Why This Matters for French Teaching

Every French class contains students with different cultural backgrounds, language experiences, and learning preferences. Adaptive expertise allows us to honour these differences while maintaining high expectations for authentic French communication.

How Our Cycle Builds Adaptive Expertise

Street data collection develops sensitivity to diverse student experiences

Video reflection builds pattern recognition across different contexts

Peer feedback exposes us to multiple problem-solving approaches

Iterative practice refines our ability to adjust in real-time
